Finding Your “Why”

Drop bad habits, finish a project, and reach your goals by asking the right questions

“Asking questions is the first way to begin change.”

Kubra Sait

Do you struggle to solve problems or complete projects? Or, maybe you lack willpower to stay on track (i.e., with a daily habit such as healthy eating, etc.)?

The key to getting back on track and staying on the path towards your goals and dreams may lie in figuring out your why.

Not the surface why, but the BIG why.

Why do you REALLY want this?

When I was training to become a life coach, one of the main skills we learned was asking powerful questions. This coaching tool involves asking a lot of open-ended why, what and how questions to dig deep, sometimes into the subconscious mind, to go past the surface-level answers and get to the true reason why something is important.

Here’s a simplified example. Let’s say you decide you want to lose weight, but you’re struggling and have trouble staying away from junk food and meeting your exercise goals. After exploring with many powerful questions and digging deeper we may be able to move from the general “I want to be healthier” in response to “Why is it important to lose weight” to the deeper reason, “I want to be healthier because I want to be able to play with my grandchildren”.

Once you’ve discovered a big enough “why” then eventually when you go to grab a cookie just because you’re bored, you can pause and ask yourself “Does this support the person I’m becoming?” You’ll be more likely to pause and reflect before you take a bite.

Here are some journal prompts to help you on your journey towards discovering your Why.

  1. Write down 5 things you are grateful for. Why do you think these things are important to you?

  2. If you could do anything you wanted in a day, what would you do? Who, if anyone, would be with you?

  3. When do you feel most like your real, authentic self?

  4. Think about the last time you were so involved in a task that time seemed to stop. What were you doing? Who were you with? Where were you?

  5. When you worry, what do you worry about? Which of those things do you think are the most important? Why?

"I felt at complete ease with Sharon from our first conversation. She has a wonderful, gentle but firm way that made me focus on my thoughts / feelings so I could remove / change to move forward with a completely different feeling to what felt like obstacles. It was great having regular coaching that gently kept me accountable to actioning and moving towards my goals. Sharon has vast experience in so many areas, I felt that makes her an amazing coach.”
