What is “life coaching” and what does a life coach do???

In general, a life coach helps people clarify what they actually want out of life and helps them create a plan to remove perceived obstacles, create their own optimal results and achieve their goals in their personal life, work, relationships and spiritual growth.

A life coach doesn’t tell people what they should do, but instead asks powerful questions in order to help the client find the answers that they already have within them.

To help clarify a little further; a life coach is like a personal trainer you would hire at the gym. For example, if you’re taking fitness classes at the gym but want to improve your physical strength and ability, you may hire a personal trainer to help you reach your fitness goals. A life coach helps you with your life in the same way a personal trainer helps with your physical fitness. We help to make your life more optimal, especially if you’re feeling like something is out of balance, i.e., you may be working too much (or too little), not playing enough (or maybe too much), or there’s just something missing and you can’t quite figure it out.

Here are a few examples of the way life change and mindset coaching may be able to help you: 

  • You’re looking for a change in life direction, i.e., perhaps a change in career or your current job or maybe you haven’t worked for a while and don’t know where to start; or

  • You feel “stuck” at work or in a personal relationship and are looking for clarity to help make a decision; or

  • You’re thinking about retirement and setting off in a whole new life direction and that feels a little scary; or

  • Your life is going pretty well but if you could just make a few little changes it would be even better.

Life Coaching from a Mind/Body Perspective

I believe that the mind and body are inextricably linked. That means life change and mindset coaching sessions with me may include mind/body practices, i.e., slow mindful yoga and meditation, to help facilitate change. All sessions are co-created and customized with the client to promote optimal results.

Finally, I’d like to clarify that coaching is not a substitute for psychotherapy. It is not for people who have serious emotional problems. Coaching is not meant to deal with personal crises but instead is about helping generally mentally healthy people create optimal results. Although coaching often helps change limiting beliefs and attitudes resulting from past experiences, it is more present and future-focused to create positive change.
