Finding the True You

6 Questions of Self-Discovery (and why it’s never too late to become who you want to be)

Does the following sound familiar to you?

  • You’ve quietly spent your whole life trying to fit in and belong in a world that doesn’t quite “get” you. You’ve always done what you believe you’re supposed to do but lately you’ve felt restless, unsettled, and a little scared that life is going by quickly and you’re not as happy as you think you should be.

  • You may have spent the last several years in a career that you thought you wanted. It pays the bills and, although you’d like to do something different, you believe it’s too late to make a change. You could retire, but what would you do? Would that be boring? Is it too late to try something different?

  • You’ve been a caregiver for years; looking after your children, your partner, and/or your parents, and yet likely not taking such great care of yourself. You were taught at a very young age to put others before yourself and don’t ever want to look “selfish”.

  • You’re exhausted, frustrated, and wondering, “Is this all there is?”

  • You’re getting older and you know that changes are coming, yet you feel stuck and unsure about how to step into the next chapter of your life. It seems like you’re gliding about aimlessly, trying to find that one magic thing that will change everything.

Chances are, you relate to some or all of these things and, although it might feel like you are, you’re not alone.

No matter what messages you get from society, or what your brain continues to tell you, you’re not too old and it’s never too late to create your ideal life.

You have that opportunity every moment, in every breath, to take a tiny step in a new direction.

Finding the True You - 6 Questions of Self-Discovery

Set aside some time for yourself, get out your journal, and ask yourself:

  1. What makes me unique?

  2. What would it look like to just be myself?

  3. If I wasn’t worried about what anyone thought and I had no fear of judgment that I would be “wrong”, what would I do today? Would anything be different from yesterday?

  4. What small step could you try today that would feel safe?

  5. What fears do you have about stepping into the “true you”?

  6. How is staying right where you are serving you? How is it useful?

Really spend the time to dig deep into these questions and try to avoid being vague.

If you’re like many women who try to answer questions like these, your brain is immediately sensing some danger and is telling you to respond, “I don’t know” because that answer will keep you safe.

Avoiding these questions will keep you comfortable, but will also keep you stuck.

Your true self knows the answers.

So, set aside a little bit of time, find a quiet space, get out your journal and start answering these questions. Really think about each one.

Always remember that you are the author of your life. You get to decide what you want to believe about yourself and the world. You can change direction at any time. You can try something and then change your mind. You can rediscover childhood dreams, long-forgotten dreams, or create some new ones.

Believe in yourself and take tiny steps each day, and always remember that:

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

"I felt at complete ease with Sharon from our first conversation. She has a wonderful, gentle but firm way that made me focus on my thoughts / feelings so I could remove / change to move forward with a completely different feeling to what felt like obstacles. It was great having regular coaching that gently kept me accountable to actioning and moving towards my goals. Sharon has vast experience in so many areas, I felt that makes her an amazing coach.”
