How to Create a Vision Board

Inspire change and start moving forward with this easy and versatile creative practice

For most of my life, I told myself a story that I wasn’t creative. I’m not sure how old I was when I started telling myself that story, but I was pretty young.

It wasn’t until I began my life coach training and got lots of peer coaching, that I realized that it was just a story and I could decide to change it.

We always have the choice to retell and rewrite our stories.

I also learned that creativity is a perfect antidote for anxiety and, since learning all this, I’ve been obsessed with all things creative, and in particular, with creative journaling and vision boards.

I’ve taken several vision board workshops and have been delighted to discover that there are many different ways to make them; each as unique as the person creating them.

As you move forward on the path to changing your life, you may want to give making one (or several) a try too.

What is a vision board? My simple definition is that a vision board is a collection of inspirational words, quotes, pictures, drawings, photographs, and/or doodles showing how you want your life to look.

In other words; it’s anything you want it to be.

A vision board will help you to:

  • Clarify your goals/dreams

  • Motivate you to move toward change

  • Inspire you to grow in ways you never imagined possible

Types of vision boards include:

  • A creative or visioning journal - use your daily journal as a place to paste or draw pictures, doodle, or add inspirational words and quotes.

  • A travel vision board - create a pictorial representation of all the places you want to go, or one trip all mapped out in a visual format.

  • A gratitude vision board - cut out pictures, quotes, and/or words that inspire your daily gratitude practice (meditation/journaling).

  • A traditional vision board - a collection of pictures and words that show how you want your life to look sometime in the future.

Here are some supplies you might want to gather to make your own vision board. This isn’t an exhaustive list; you get to choose what materials to use. These are only suggestions:

Scissors
Glue stick/tape
Pens in all sorts of colours
Markers/pencils/crayons/paints
Photographs
Magazines (to cut out pictures/words)
Bristol board/journal/construction paper

You can also create a digital vision board by using an application like Canva. Let your imagination take over.

Before you get started, I recommend spending some time meditating, visualizing and journaling about what you want to create.

You also may want to set up your creative space to support your journey. For example, you might want to choose some music to listen to, light a candle, and get whatever else you want to create your own personal, supportive place to work on your vision board.

As you can see, there’s no limit to what you can create with vision boards. Go where your imagination and your dreams take you. When you’re done, put your board in a place where you can see it every day and let it continue to inspire you.
